This two-day course is designed for clinicians who wish to expand their theoretical knowledge and practical application of the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of conditionsrelated to pelvic, women’s and systemic health. The course focusses on Western medical perspectives in the treatment of a variety of conditions. The course presents a clinical reasoning model for the integration of evidence-based acupuncture into clinical practice utilizing the segmental and systemic physiological approached to acupuncture for a variety of pelvic, women’s and associated systemic health conditions. All participants should have already successfully undertaken a relevant foundation level acupuncture training.

Aims

• To develop participant’s theoretical knowledge of acupuncture and its role within the broad scope of women’s health including incontinence, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, hyperemesis, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, erectile dysfunction and digestive disorders
• To develop participant’s practical skills in the treatment of women’s health conditions within the area of obstetrics and gynaecology for a variety of clinical conditions including; incontinence, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, hyperemesis, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, erectile dysfunction and digestive disorders.
 

Training Objectives

Knowledge

To be able to:

• Develop a clinical reasoning model for the use of acupuncture within the area of pelvic, obstetric and gynaecological conditions.
• Select appropriate acupuncture points for the treatment of a variety of women’s health conditions.
 

Skills

To be able to:

• Safely and effectively employ a variety of needling techniques for women’s health.
• Safely and effectively use the acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of conditions.
• Safely and effectively select points for the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of women’s health conditions based on an evidence based clinical reasoning model
 

Understanding

To understand:

• The physiological basis of acupuncture in the area of obstetrics and gynaecology.
• The health and safety issues related to women’s health acupuncture.
• The concept of biological plausibility for acupuncture for a variety of women’s health conditions.
• The clinically reasoned use of acupuncture within women’s health and its integration within a variety of therapy approaches.

These objectives will be achieved through a variety of teaching strategies including lectures, tutorials, seminars, action groups, problem-based learning scenarios, clinical reasoning-based case studies and practical needling situations. Learning will also be supported by the course study manual and the use of research-based teaching materials and methods.

Students will be provided with the following resources for their use on the course: course manual, handouts, anatomical point location images and a selection of needles.

The course runs from 09:00 to 16:30 on both days (14 hours CPD). Theory/Practical ratio 1:3.

Part 1: Systemic Women’s & Pelvic Health Acupuncture CPD Course

Concepts included: The Hobbs Paradigm or “5 reasons to needle”

1. Local trauma, inflammation & healing response (CGRP, NO, NGF) Loaded.
2. Local analgesia (opioid response).
3. Myofascial effect & mechanical responses (ROM, function) Loading, 
4. Segmental analgesia & responses (A delta, C, derma/myotome).
5. Central & systemic effects (autonomic regulation, descending opioid, ACTH
 

Conditions treated include incontinence, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, hyperemesis, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, erectile dysfunction and digestive disorders.

Practical content included:

1. Abdominal, lumbopelvic and lower limb neuromuscular anatomy overview
2. Clinical anatomy and palpation of the abdominal region, lumbopelvic structures and lower limbs
3. Neuroanatomy, biological plausibility and prescription and protocol development
4. Needling of the lumbar and sacral regions
5. Needling of the abdominal region
6. Peripheral perineural needling for segmental and systemic effects
7. Electroacupuncture to enhance segmental and systemic treatment interventions
8. Auricular anatomy, physiology and acupuncture

Bio

Jonathan Hobbs MSc MCSP FHEA

As a Chartered Physiotherapist Jonathan has over 25 year’s clinical experience in acupuncture and dry needling and was awarded his MSc in acupuncture in the UK in 2004 and has studied a PhD in acupuncture at the University of Nanjing, China. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has served an unprecedented four consecutive terms as the Chairman of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). Jonathan delivers medical acupuncture and dry needling training internationally and has been published in a variety of journals and textbooks including Sports Physiology and Injury Management (Elsevier, 2020). Jonathan has previously been the Principal of a School of Physiotherapy and created schools of Physiotherapy for several UK universities. He currently acts as a consultant and sessional lecturer to a number of universities throughout the UK & US. He is also an expert legal witness and a consultant and tutor to clinicians within Premiership and Championship football, the English Institute of Sport, UK Athletics, Team Great Britain, the English National Ballet, His Majesty’s Armed Forces, and the NHS. In the US Jonathan has also been invited to teach clinicians within the NFL, MLB, NBA and the US military.

Jonathan is excited to partner up with The Mummy MOT He has treated women’s and pelvic health conditions for over 20 years clinically and has taught acupuncture within pelvic health for over 15 years. He has also taught cadaveric anatomy for over 10 years and delivers specialist anatomical training for clinicians in pelvic and women’s health. The Mummy MOT are thrilled to be working directly with Jonathan to enhance our training offers to our community of practitioners and wider to equip clinicians with more tools to optimise the care we can provide to our clients.

He also splits his time between continued clinical practice, point of care diagnostic ultrasound, mentorship, teaching and writing.
