What does this course offer?
This course is designed for clinicians specialising in pelvic health who are competent in vaginal assessment of the pelvic floor complex and management of urinary dysfunction and associated conditions, now wishing to extend their practice into the “posterior compartment” of the pelvis.
Assessment and management of bowel dysfunction is often the “missing piece” of the puzzle within pelvic floor dysfunction, and critical to pelvic health.
This course is an entry level course designed to teach competency in digital ano-rectal examination and assessment of the lower bowel.
There will be a significant theory component taking a detailed look at the anatomy and pathophysiology of the lower bowel and how this links in with bowel function/dysfunction.
It will also introduce theory underpinning management strategies for the main categories of bowel dysfunction (constipation/bowel incontinence) to enable critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
This is not a course designed to offer an A-Z of bowel assessment/management. It is aimed at introducing clinicians to an area they may have been wary of (as many are with bowels), or simply unaware of! Once you start to acknowledge and explore the posterior pelvic compartment, it makes sense of symptoms not obviously linked with bowel function, but that extend across the spectrum of pelvic health, including prolapse, pain associated with sexual activity, vulvodynia, coccyx pain and more.
